Public Health and Technical Content Course Descriptions

 


PHT 2001, 3001 - Practicum
1 hour credit

Each student is required to participate in at least five embalmings per credit hour earned. This is a hands-on performance level course. Each operation assisted by the student is recorded on a case report which becomes part of that student's record.


PHT 2074 - Embalming Theory
4 hours credit

The student is instructed in every aspect of the knowledge and skills necessary in the preparation of the deceased for public viewing.  This includes a history, technical treatment of the terminology of death, and the objectives of the embalming process, including variable problems and solutions.

PHT 3053 - Thanatochemistry
3 hours credit

Begins with the study of General Chemistry. Includes atomic and molecular structure, physical states, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, solutions, oxidation-reduction, and acids-bases-salts. Then progresses to Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Embalming Chemistry, and ends with a consideration of toxicology.


PHT 3134 - Restorative Art
4 hours credit

The student is instructed in the restoration of the deceased for public viewing. Instruction covers every aspect of the knowledge and skills necessary to equip the student to carry out any partial restoration including application of cosmetics and hairdressing.


PHT 4243 - Pathology
3 hours credit

The study of disease and the disease process as it affects the human body. Special emphasis is placed on how various pathological conditions affect the embalming process. An introduction to autopsies and forensic pathology is also included.
