| SSC 1163 - Introduction to Psychology 3 hours credit This course provides a basic orientation to the psychology of human behavior. The student will study the aims and methods of psychological investigation and measurement and the influences of biological and social factors upon behavior. The course will also focus upon the area of learning, motivation, emotion, perception, and personality development. |
| SSC 2063 - Introduction to Sociology 3 hours credit A study of the concepts of sociology with an emphasis on theory and research including culture, socialization, social processes, population and ecology, stratification, aging and the family. |
| SSC 4101 - History of Funeral Service 1 hour credit A survey of the funeral practices and beliefs of all major Western Cultures from preEgyptian times to the present. Emphasis is placed on the development of the JudeoChristian tradition, especially during the Greco-Roman period, as the primary basis of modern funeral tradition and beliefs. Present American funeral practices, including embalming and methods of disposition, are discussed in view of their origin and development. The evolution of the modern funeral director from the early English undertaker is discussed as well as the effect of Colonialism to American traditions and beliefs. Special emphasis is also placed on the modern developments in funeral service customs, the growth and change of funeral merchandise, and the rise of professional organizations and education. |
| SSC 4183 - Funeral Service Counseling 3 hours credit Covers the current theories in personal counseling with an emphasis on the bereavement environment. The student is taught counseling skills and is given insight into disaster management and crisis intervention skills. Counseling as a tool in the grief resolution process is examined. |
